What Are The Odds Of Hitting A Jackpot?
There’s no hard and fast way to determine your chances of winning a slot machine jackpot on one particular spin but there are likely better times to play a jackpot slot machine where the jackpot is more likely to be won.
All slot machines are governed by a Random Number Generator (RNG). RNGs are complex pieces of software which always produce random and differing series of numbers when a slots game’s “Spin”, “Max Bet” or similar button is pressed.
Those random numbers are then used to determine the symbols which will be displayed to the player, and the combination of those symbols is obviously what dictates the result of the spin.
That wholly random nature of the workings of slots and progressive slots then, explains why it is largely impossible to assess your chances of hitting the jackpot on any given spin.
However…
When Is A Jackpot Ready To Drop?
The rigorously tested and regulated RNGs used to run progressive slots games do generally make it impossible to pinpoint when any game may pay out the jackpot. It has been revealed however, that there is a software quirk built into some games that does make their operation slightly less random.
This previously unknown feature of progressive slots software was revealed on Reddit by a software designer and essentially means that some games have a threshold that must be hit before they can payout.
The software designer behind the Reddit post explained the feature in the following way:
“Moving on to progressives. Let’s say a progressive must hit by $10k. Every time a player places a max bet, the progressive asks the RNG if 1/10000000 is true. No? Then no hit.
As the Must Hit goal gets closer, the question becomes “1/1000000”. And then “1/100000”. Etc. So each player has an equal chance to hit the jackpot. Eventually the odds narrow enough that the jackpot will be hit, but there is no way of knowing which player hit until it happens.”
From this it’s pretty safe to assume that the bigger the jackpot the more likely it will be won soon.
How To Win A Slots Jackpot
Alongside the question of ‘how can you tell when a progressive jackpot will pay out?’ another very common query is that of ‘how you can improve your chances of winning a slots jackpot?’.
There is one major practical thing which you can do to ensure that you have a chance of winning.

You MUST ensure that your selected game settings actually qualify you to win the main jackpot that a game has to offer.
Different jackpot slot machines have different rules surrounding how you qualify for the main prize.

Aside from making sure you meet the criteria to win and playing when jackpots are at their highest there isn’t a lot else you can do.
Some advise only playing progressive jackpot slot machines when the slot RTP percentage is above 100% meaning the game is ready to pay out… well it’s impossible to tell exactly how a slot machine is paying out at any given moment so this strategy is pretty useless.
The nature of RNGs means that winners truly are random and the best thing to do is just play and hope you get lucky. The good thing is you’ve got the exact same chance of winning as any other player!
How Do Progressive Jackpots Work?
Progressive jackpot slots are slots games where an amount is added to the jackpot every time the game is played and this amount continues to build until one lucky player gets the right combination of symbols and wins the lot.
There are four main different types of progressive slots games and the main features of and differences between these types are explained at length below.
Standalone Jackpots
Standalone progressives are games where the jackpot ticker refers just to that particular game. Only wagers on the game itself therefore, count towards the jackpot and only players of that particular game are eligible to win the jackpot.
There is less scope for jackpots to rise as quickly or as big with this type of game. In fact, on average the maximum jackpot for standalone games tends to be somewhere between R21 500 and R216 000.
Local Jackpots
Local progressive jackpot slots games differ slightly from the standalone version, in that they increase the pool of players contributing to the jackpot to those playing a variety of different games at the same online casino.
Wagers on a range of games at the casino therefore, are used to contribute to the jackpot and to help it grow more quickly. It is this type of progressive that explains how different online casinos can offer the same game but have it providing an entirely different jackpot prize.
Network Jackpots
Network progressive jackpot slots have the biggest prize pools available. The massive size of these jackpots is explained by the fact that these particular games appear on a whole variety of different online casinos the world over, with the wagers of players from all of those sites contributing to the jackpot.

A type of progressive slots slightly apart from the main trio of varieties, tiered or multi-level games are slots where a range of different sized jackpots are available.
Each wager on these games therefore, contributes in different proportions to each jackpot with the largest contribution going towards the highest ‘main’ jackpot.
For these types of games, the smallest jackpot levels tend to be in the hundreds of rand range and are won far more often than jackpots for any other progressive jackpot slots games. As the jackpot level increases however, the regularity of a win decreases as you would expect but the general premise of these games is that players who win a lower level jackpot will be keener to play again to try to win one of the bigger prizes.
It is often also the case with these games that the highest jackpot amounts are only able to be triggered by players who place the maximum bet amount, and that it is only the lower jackpots that are available to all.
